Councillor David Smart

10th March 1936 - 8th September 2010

By John Burns

David Smart was a good friend to the Allotment Federation. In his position as the Allotment Liaison Councillor between the Brighton & Hove City Council Environment Committee (led by Councillor Geofrey Theobald) and the Federation, David would fight our corner over issues that the Federation raised.

David took it upon himself on a Sunday morning to visit sites and talk to tenants asking  about their particular site and the problems that they may be encountering. Many of  you would have met and spoken to him. David did not have to do this it was not part of  his job description but he felt very strongly that the Allotment Service was an important part of the social structure that the City Council should support in every way.

As of March 2010, the liaison Councillor has not yet been replaced, it was decided to leave the appointment vacant until after the forthcoming local elections, all I know is that whoever takes  on the role will have difficult shoes to fill.

David Rest in Peace
