Russ Howarth (Vice Chairman)

At the AGM Russ Howarth (Vice Chairman) promised to publish his thoughts about self-management on the BHAF website. His notes are linked at the bottom of this page, along with a Power Point Presentation that Paul Neary from the National Society showed us during the strategy process.

We would like to emphasise that despite rumours to the contrary, there is no movement by the BHAF to encourage or organise self management of allotments. There are certainly not any plans for compulsory self management in the pipeline!

Self management was discussed during the strategy and remains an option for sites to explore if they wish. However this could only ever take place if the majority of plot holders on a site voted for this to happen.

There are many levels of self management as Russ and Paul explain in their documents. In fact we already have self management in Brighton to a small degree due to the fact that we have volunteer ‘Site reps’ to take care of the lettings and do inspections, for which they receive a free full plot. Lettings and inspections were carried out by the Council before then. Some sites, for example ‘Moulsecoomb Estate’ and ‘The Weald’ have already gone further and have ‘Maintenance Reps’, these are volunteers who take on some minor maintenance jobs and in return receive free rent for their plot.
